Union School District, Foundation for Excellence

Assessment

How do we know when the students in the Union School District have met the standards at their grade level? What do we do if students have not met standards? Assessment is an important component of what teachers do on a daily basis in their classrooms. Both formal (i.e., written tests, quizzes, etc.) and informal (i.e., observation, oral quizzes, etc.) assessment play a vital role in the Union School District.

Teachers use both informal and formal, periodic assessments in the core academic areas to glean an understanding of what their children know and what needs to be re-taught. These assessments are aligned with the standards and instruction. The primary use of assessment is for teachers to better understand the academic needs of their students and to assist them in designing instruction that will meet those needs.

In addition to district and classroom based assessments, students in the Union School district also take the summative California STAR assessment each year. This assessment helps teachers and administrators to make both district and school wide decisions, based on data, to better meet the academic needs of all of our students.
