January 2018

Happy New Year to all of our USD families and staff! I hope everyone had the opportunity to have a restful and well-deserved holiday break with family and friends. A new year always brings excitement and 2018 at Union School District is sure to bring amazing new experiences and possibilities.

Closing out 2017, the district saw the delivery and construction of elementary Makerspaces at Carlton, Guadalupe and Noddin. The excitement of everyone on campus was clear and I cannot wait to see the innovation and learning in full effect in 2018. Solar panel installation was also completed in December and flexible furniture pilots will continue throughout the year. With the strong support of our community, we are excited about the progress of several projects slated for completion this year.

One of our most important missions in Union School District is helping our students to become caring and compassionate citizens. Along with other schools across California, we will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge of 2018 during the week of January 22.

The Great Kindness Challenge is a week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. The acts of kindness include not only being kind to others, but being kind to yourself, animals, and the earth. Write a thank you note to your mail carrier or a firefighter; make a new friend; smile or say “good morning” to five people; or learn to say “hello” in a new language. There are many exciting ways we can promote a culture of acceptance and tolerance. The intent of this one dedicated week is that it will hopefully spread into the rest of the year, off school grounds, into neighborhoods, and onto local communities.

We will be documenting and sharing our acts of kindness on Twitter and encourage everyone to participate and use the hashtags #GreatKindnessChallenge and #USDLearns.

I am so proud of everything our students, teachers, staff and community accomplished in 2017, and I know we will take on the new year with just as much enthusiasm, wonder, and kindness.
