Happy New Year! I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday break with family and friends. I welcome everyone back to what I know will be an amazing 2019!! Our schools began the year again with SmartStart: team-building, engaging and fun activities to bring students and staff back into the rhythm of the school year.
Alta Vista and Carlton students stretched their creative muscles, creating works of art and cardboard arcade games. At Oster, students explored stop-motion filmmaking. At Lietz, students explored various cultures through food and other traditions. Several classes at Union Middle School participated in Digital Breakout challenges in various subjects. Students at Dartmouth Middle did various activities to promote social emotional growth with a Project Cornerstone kickoff including filmmaking and puzzles. At Guadalupe, students worked on several Lego challenges, including designing mazes and creating ziplines. Students at Noddin also practiced their coding skills and created harmonicas. Thank you to our talented teachers for facilitating these engaging activities for our students and getting 2019 started in a fun and exciting way!!
Union School District is also excited to present several parent learning opportunities in January, including popular sessions from myDigitalTat2 that cover parenting strategies in the digital and social media age. We are also offering these sessions as a livestream on YouTube for any parents who cannot attend in person. For event and livestream information, please visit our Parents Learn portal at http://bit.ly/USDParentsLearn.
These sessions are valuable opportunities for parents and educators, and we encourage parents of students across all grades to attend.
We are so lucky to have active and engaged educators, parents and community members involved in our schools. Parents and industry leaders have partnered with our schools to give our students valuable, real-world experiences. Middle school students recently learned valuable entrepreneurial and engineering skills at NextFlex, and parents from different industries shared their expertise with families at our elementary STEAM nights. We are lucky to have a diverse and engaged community involved in our schools.Middle School STEM Students Visit DuPont’s New Silicon Valley Technology Center - December 3, 2018Union Middle School FlexFactor Spring - December 13, 2018
It is so wonderful to witness the amazing community support of our district as well as the contributions of former USD students and families. Recently, a former USD alumnus shared her story. Jeannine Creighton-Boettcher attended Howes Elementary and Union Junior High (now Union Middle) between 1967 and 1976, and she recalled her favorite memories of the science club and glee club. Her family is now in their fourth generation of attending or working for Union School District. Her mother, Gail, taught at Alta Vista and Athenour, her children attended USD schools, and she has a grandson currently attending Alta Vista. We thank Jeannine for sharing her story and appreciate her long-standing contributions to our community.
If you attended Union School District and would like to share an experience, please share it with us at http://bit.ly/USDalumni.
We wish you and your families a wonderful start to the new year!
