In Union School District, excellent attendance is about building a strong academic foundation and fostering a strong sense of community.
When your child is present in the classroom every day, they gain consistent access to learning and build essential social connections. Regular attendance allows students to:
Feel a sense of belonging by participating fully in classroom discussions and activities.
Forge stronger relationships with teachers and classmates, creating a supportive peer network.
Develop consistency and routine, which are key to emotional regulation and academic success.
Every single day counts, not just for your student’s future, but for the energy and collective learning of their entire class. Let's work together to ensure every student is present and accounted for.
Daily attendance is crucial to the education and social success of every student. Consistent attendance helps students stay engaged and motivated in their studies, fostering a positive attitude towards learning. Regular attendance enables students to keep pace with the instruction, participate in class discussions, and complete assignments on time. In addition, consistent school attendance provides opportunities to develop social skills, build relationships with peers, and participate in extracurricular activities, promoting overall well-being.

To help our school’s office staff process attendance and to ensure our families are aware if their student has been marked absent, USD schools use ParentSquare to send families attendance notices each day for a student who is absent for any reason. You may have received a notice like this before via text or app notice, voice call or email, that also includes a link for a parent/guardian to send a note to the school.
If you receive a notice and you have already provided the school’s attendance line or a staff member with an absence reason, then no action is needed on your part. If you haven’t yet, we recommend you use the send a note feature to share the reason for the absence.
Independent Study may be requested if your child is unable to attend school due to an event or family situation. Short-term independent studies are those that are fewer than 15 days. Independent Studies are not approved for the school days during the first and last two weeks of an academic year. Through a signed contract, the child, under the guidance of the parent, agrees to complete the classwork assignments, projects, and homework for the five or more days of missed attendance. Upon grading and approval that all assignments have been completed satisfactorily, the teacher will note the successful completion of the Independent Study Work. Forms are available from the school administrative assistant.
When a student's attendance becomes an area of concern, our school sites are dedicated to working closely and collaboratively with families to find solutions. Families will receive letters to inform them of the number and type of absences their student has. We understand that chronic absenteeism can stem from various challenges, and the first step in our intervention process is the supportive Pre-SARB (School Attendance Review Board) meeting. This meeting is designed as a positive opportunity for the student, parent, and school administration to create a structured attendance contract. This contract is a mutual agreement that focuses entirely on identifying specific barriers, establishing proactive strategies, and ensuring that every student has the support needed to increase their daily attendance and fully benefit from being part of our school community.
This information below explains when a letter would be sent home to families.
Letter 1: 3 or more truancies
Letter 2: 6 or more truancies and a Pre-SARB meeting
Letter 3 : 10 or more truancies and SARB Hearing
Letter 1: The student has missed 10% of the school year—Pre-SARB meeting.
If absences continue after the Pre-SARB meeting, the student will be referred to SARB.
Letter 1: 7 excused absences
If absences continue after the Pre-SARB meeting, the student will be referred to SARB.
Letter 2: 12 excused absences - Pre-SARB

California Education Code 48320 authorizes school districts to collaborate with students, their families, law enforcement, and community resources to address individual student attendance issues. Participants can include the district nurse, a parent representative, the site administrator, other pertinent staff members, and the Director of Student Services. At the SARB hearing, the school team will work alongside the family to create a contract to support the student in increasing their attendance. If attendance continues to decline after the SARB hearing, the family will then be referred to RISE (Resources to Improve Student Education) Court.
