Union School District schools serve an essential community need. Founded in 1863, Union School District has continued to build upon its foundation of excellence. From its earliest beginnings in a one-room schoolhouse to our present district of eight schools with over 5,400 students, USD has continued to provide the community with exceptional schools.
Maintaining its stellar achievement as one of the highest performing districts in San Jose, Union is also renowned for providing a caring, supportive, and student-centered culture in all of its schools. Exceptional teachers and instructional support staff, small class sizes, challenging instructional programs, dedicated parent volunteers, and outstanding science, math and art curricula have prepared generations of local children to succeed in high school, college, and careers.
Thanks to the support of the community over many years, Union School District is able to maintain excellent teaching and learning through locally controlled funding via an Education Parcel Tax.
The Measure B parcel tax was passed on November 3, 2015 which is the continuation of the Measure H parcel tax and provides funding for our local schools. Measure B was passed with a 74.77% approval rate, providing a 10-year extension to the Measure H $96 per/parcel education parcel tax.
The Measure V parcel tax was passed by the Union School District community on November 5, 2024 with 70.54% of the vote. Measure V renewed Measure B with a $52 increase, for a total of $148 per/parcel, for seven years. Measure V funding will be used to support students in grades TK-8 by maintaining high-quality educational programs, including math, reading, and writing, and hands-on science instruction, technology and engineering; attract and retain highly qualified teachers and instructional support staff; provide high-quality programs in music, visual, and performing arts and more for a well-rounded education.
Homeowners within the Union School District who qualify under the categories of Senior Citizen, Contiguous Parcel or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) can apply for a parcel tax exemption for their primary owner occupied residence.
To request a form or if you have any questions, please call (408) 558-4202 or email parceltax@unionsd.org.
As required by Measure B and Measure V, an independent citizens' fiscal oversight committee will meet to determine that expenditures meet the intent of the original ballot measure language as approved by the voters and provide a report to the school board.
The Union School District is seeking qualified candidates to serve on the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee (“PTOC”) that oversees the implementation of the District’s Measure B and Measure V parcel tax. Candidates interested in applying to serve on the PTOC as a Retiree Community Member (active in senior citizens organization) or Member in a bona fide taxpayer organization, please submit a completed application to duncanr@unionsd.org by July 15, 2025.
