We are incredibly grateful for our community's generosity. Whether you contribute time, materials, or financial support, your donations help us provide truly enriched experiences for our students. Please know that while contributions are always appreciated, they are entirely voluntary. Every student has full access to all essential instruction and programs, regardless of whether a donation is made.
If you would like to donate to USD or a particular program or if you have any questions about donations, please contact Rachel Duncan at duncanr@unionsd.org in our Business Office.
All donations are considered tax-deductible and donation receipts can be provided for tax reporting requirements.
USD is proud of our Blessing in a Backpack program, a resource that provides free meals to students facing food insecurity during weekends and school breaks—a time when state-funded school meals aren't available. It’s also a leadership opportunity, with UMS and DMS students taking charge in packing and preparing the food for delivery each week. We currently serve over 70 students weekly funded exclusively by the generous donations of our community.
The USD Clothing Closet is a vital program that provides free clothing, school supplies, and hygiene items to our district's families. Our goal is to provide families with essential clothing and supplies in a way that upholds their dignity and privacy. Your donations of new or gently used clothing, along with financial contributions, help us stock essential items for our families.
When you include Union School District in your will, trust, or estate plans, you create a lasting legacy that empowers educators and inspires generations of learners. Whether you choose to make a bequest, name USD as a beneficiary, or explore other planned giving options, your gift will have a lasting impact on children, teachers, and our community.
If you are considering a legacy gift, we would be able to confidentially discuss your questions. Please contact Kirsten Perez at perezk@unionsd.org or (408) 377-8010 x 44224. Of course, we always recommend you work with your advisors to determine which gift(s) is most appropriate for you.
Through a Will or Trust
This is one of the most common types of legacy gifts. You can arrange to leave a specific dollar amount or asset, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after specific gifts to loved ones have been made. This type of planned gift allows you to support the future of learning while ensuring your loved ones are cared for first.
Retirement Plan or Life Insurance
You can name Union School District as the beneficiary of your individual retirement account (IRA), 401(k), 403(b), donor-advised fund (DAF), life insurance policy, or other account. These gifts are easy to arrange or modify. Simply complete a beneficiary designation form from your plan administrator to name USD as a beneficiary of all or part of your account. If the retirement assets are tax-deferred, the portion left to USD will not be subject to tax. If you are over 70.5 years or older you can reduce your taxable income by making a gift to USD directly from your IRA.
IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)
If you are 70.5 or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 annually directly from your IRA to USD as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). These gifts count towards your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) without increasing your taxable income, making them a smart and impactful way to give.
The District is pleased to accept general donations through our official Venmo account. If you would like your contribution to support a specific school program or site, please include the program or school name in the payment notes.
